Más de 1.200 personas murieron por el sismo y el tsunami en la isla indonesia de Célebes, donde este martes continuaban las operaciones de búsqueda y la policía intentaba evitar saqueos.
La policía hizo disparos de advertencia y lanzó gases lacrimógenos para dispersar a la gente que saqueaba comercios en Palu, una ciudad costera destrozada por el terremoto de magnitud 7,5 y el tsunami que le siguió el pasado viernes.
La policía, que hasta ahora había tolerado que los sobrevivientes desesperados tomaran comida y agua de los negocios cerrados, decidió detener a 35 personas por robar computadoras y dinero.
“El primero y segundo día no había negocios abiertos. La gente tenía hambre. Había gente realmente necesitada. Eso no es un problema”, dijo el subcomisario de la policía nacional, Ari Dono Sukmanto.
“Pero tras el segundo día, los alimentos comenzaron a llegar, sólo se necesita distribuirlos. Ahora estamos restableciendo le ley”, añadió.
La desesperación es patente en las calles de Palu, donde los sobrevivientes escalan las montañas de restos a la búsqueda de algo recuperable.
Otros se amontonan alrededor de los pocos edificios que aún tienen electricidad, o hacen cola para obtener agua, dinero en efectivo o combustible, escoltado por convoyes de policías armados.
“El gobierno, el presidente, vinieron pero lo que realmente necesitamos es comida y agua”, dijo a AFP Burhanuddin Aid Masse, de 48 años.
Los socorristas no tienen maquinaria suficiente y su labor se complica por las carreteras cortadas y los daños en las infraestructuras. Además, este martes el país registró dos sismos más frente a sus costas pero a cientos de kilómetros de Palu.
