El Reino Unido ha dado luz verde al proceso de extradición de Julian Assange, el cofundador de Wikileaks, a Estados Unidos. El ministro del Interior británico, Sajid Javid, ha confirmado este jueves en la BBC que ha firmado la orden en las últimas horas. “Assange está donde tiene que estar, encarcelado. Hay una petición de extradición de Estados Unidos pendiente de la decisión de los tribunales, pero ayer firmé la orden de extradición y la certifiqué, para que se presente mañana mismo ante la justicia”, ha dicho.
Assange, condenado a un año de prisión por saltarse las normas de la libertad provisional impuesta por la justicia británica y atrincherarse en la embajada de Ecuador en Londres, donde tuvo protección diplomática, hace frente hasta a 18 acusaciones en los tribunales estadounidenses. Las más graves incluyen delitos contra la ley de espionaje y contra la seguridad nacional. Se le acusa de publicar información confidencial relacionada con las intervenciones militares en Irak y Afganistán, en connivencia con la exsoldado Chelsea Manning.
La vista de la extradición se celebrará este viernes, y dependiendo de las condiciones de Assange, de 47 años, podría tener lugar en la misma prisión de Bemarsh, en Londres, donde se encuentra actualmente.
El proceso de extradición a Estados Unidos toma así ventaja respecto al iniciado por la Fiscalía de Suecia, donde se persigue al hacker por presuntos delitos de abusos sexuales a dos mujeres que colaboraron con Wikileaks en un acto celebrado en Estocolmo en 2010. Assange niega esas acusaciones. Un tribunal sueco paralizó la petición de extradición al no considerar necesario que el prófugo tuviera que ser detenido para iniciar el proceso. Suecia había decidido reiniciar los trámites para la entrega al reabrir un caso que había sido cerrado provisionalmente. El detonante fue la entrega de Assange a las autoridades británicas por parte de Ecuador. El Gobierno de Lenín Moreno decidió levantar la protección al prófugo concedida por el anterior presidente, Rafael Correa, por las actividades ilegales desplegadas por Assange desde la embajada ecuatoriana en Londres, incluidas sus injerencias en la campaña del referéndum ilegal de independencia en Cataluña celebrado el 1 de octubre de 2017.
