El primer ministro británico, Boris Johnson, aseguró este viernes que el Reino Unido estará «fuera» de la Unión Europea (UE) el próximo 31 de enero, y se mostró determinado a alcanzar una nueva relación comercial con ese bloque.
«Estaremos fuera de la UE y esto es lo más importante», dijo el líder conservador en una entrevista con la cadena BBC, como parte de la campaña para las elecciones generales del 12 de diciembre.
El «premier» insistió en que el Brexit permitirá al Reino Unido hacer cosas «de otra manera, alcanzar acuerdos de libre comercio, estaremos fuera y esa será una gran oportunidad para nuestro país».
Johnson, que confía obtener la mayoría absoluta, resaltó que el acuerdo que se negociará con la UE será «como ningún otro» que el bloque haya hecho porque lo hará con un país que «ya está en perfecta armonía con sus arreglos (de regulación)».
«No hay ninguna razón por la que, entre enero y finales del año próximo (el periodo de transición tras el Brexit) no completemos ese libre acuerdo comercial y tengamos una maravillosa nueva relación con la UE basada en tarifas cero, cero cuotas», agregó.
Para el primer ministro, lo importante es que las empresas podrán tener «certeza» de que hasta finales de 2020 regirán «los mismos arreglos» y «tarifas cero» con «nuestros amigos europeos».
Al mismo tiempo, defendió el acuerdo de retirada que negoció con la UE y dijo que espera que el próximo Parlamento lo apruebe porque permitirá a los británicos recuperar «su dinero, sus fronteras, sus leyes, podrán hacer acuerdos de libre comercio y, lo más importante, el Reino Unido en su conjunto saldrá» de la UE.
El primer ministro fue rotundo al afirmar que no pedirá otro retraso de la salida del Reino Unido del club comunitario -tras el tercero solicitado recientemente hasta el 31 de enero-.
Los conservadores de Johnson mantienen una ventaja de 14 puntos frente al Laborismo de Jeremy Corbyn en las últimas encuestas sobre intención de voto de cara a los comicios de diciembre.
Un reciente sondeo de la YouGov otorgó a los «tories» un 42 % de apoyo, un 28 % a los laboristas y a los proeuropeos del Partido Liberal Demócrata el 15%.
Según los medios, los conservadores han conseguido un mayor apoyo después de que el Partido del Brexit de Nigel Farage anunciase el lunes que la formación no presentará candidatos en los 317 escaños ganados por los conservadores en 2017, a fin de no dividir el voto.
El líder del Partido del Brexit justificó la decisión ante el temor de que, en caso de disputarle los escaños a Johnson, pueda surgir otro Parlamento fragmentado en diciembre, lo que hará más difícil concretar la retirada británica de la UE.
